RETAIL BANKING IN THE 21ST CENTURY – BUILDING THE WINNING POSITION!

I have chosen to focus on those few critical strategic issues that I believe will be at the heart of any survival strategy for the new Millennium. Put another way, they are the areas in which I do not believe we can afford to fail!

Those who win will be characterized by the strength of their brand. They will be acknowledged for the sophistication and competitiveness of their delivery systems – with leading edge capabilities in the web and e-commerce arenas. Any they will have the relationship software tools that enable them to build and sustain a dialogue with their customers; one that gains in strength, as it extends in product holdings.

To be successful, bankers will need to recruit the best management talent available. They will have to look outside banking to industries that already know the meaning of intense competition, for example, fast moving consumer goods. They may well be operating in an increasingly disaggregated environment where – as an autonomous trading arm or subsidiary – they can move quickly in an ever more competitive climate.

Winning is competing, surviving and succeeding by growing both the business and value for the shareholders. All this, in a climate where we will have to deal with the well resourced competition that will arise from both within our own market and from cross border predators. Such will be the challenges of retail banking in the 21 century!
