Like many Malaysians, I shed tears of joy to see the coming together for our esteemed leaders Tun Dr Mahathir and outgoing Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
For me, it was the best news to emerge from the 4 day UMNO general assembly apart from the transformation and re-energizing of the party. Fences have been mended. The overtures of reconciliation between the 2 made it all the more sweeter coming from Prime Minister in waiting Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. It was a strong signal from him that UMNO should close ranks, from top to bottom.
UMNO is weak not because of the opposition but because of differences within. A united UMNO is needed before it can concentrate on steering the country out of the economic doldrums and lead to a stabilized Barisan Nasional.
Another heartrending moment at the assembly was Abdullah seeking forgiveness from UMNO members whom he thinks he might have offended so that he can retire with peaceful heart. He singled out new deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, one of the proponents who pressured Abdullah to step down. This is the hallmark of a pious Muslim leader who forgives, forgets and does not bear a grudge.
It’s sad to see Abdullah go prematurely and we wish him a happy retirement. Not many countries have 2 living former Prime Minister and we look forward to Abdullah and Dr Mahathir inputting their expertise and experience to help Najib make our country more prosperous and harmonies.
